“A word after a word after a word is power.” ―Margaret Atwood
A United Virginia, A United Voice of Resistance.
The Virginia chapter of WDA unites writers, readers, editors, and booksellers to champion democracy within the Commonwealth and beyond, and to uphold the institutions that safeguard it.
We are committed to:
Defending fundamental civil liberties:
The right to vote and have our votes accurately counted
The freedom to assemble and protest
The liberty to write and read without undue restriction
The right to access educational material that empowers and enriches all Virginians
Actively opposing censorship that restricts access to books, limits freedom of expression in writing, and impedes academic freedom.
Building a strong Commonwealth upon the open exchange of diverse perspectives, the robust education of its citizenry, and the equitable treatment of all.
Ensuring that all Virginians, including those in marginalized communities, have unfettered access to literature and knowledge, providing the tools to critically engage with the full spectrum of human thought and expression, and preventing anyone from being left behind in the face of censorship efforts.
How Do We Accomplish This?
Organize voter registration drives, especially in underserved communities.
Provide educational resources on voting rights, ballot access, and election procedures.
Lobby for legislation that strengthens voting rights and protects against voter suppression.
Publicly support and defend the right to peaceful assembly and protest.
Educate the public on the legal framework surrounding protests and assembly.
Provide resources and support to individuals and groups exercising their right to protest.
Organize public events and discussions on the importance of freedom of expression.
Challenge censorship attempts in libraries, schools, and other institutions.
Support local writers and independent bookstores.
Advocate for policies that protect intellectual freedom and access to diverse literature.
Create public awareness campaigns regarding book bans and censorship.
Monitor legislation and policies that could infringe on civil liberties.
Support legal challenges to unconstitutional laws and practices.
